Lord Ahmad Visits Egypt During Ramadan to Boost UK Ties
Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the UK Minister for the Middle East, paid a timely visit to Egypt during the holy month of Ramadan. The minister, also responsible for the UK’s hydrogen initiatives, aimed to ramp up cooperation and explore new areas for collaboration between the two nations.
Ramadan Reflections and High-Profile Meetings
At a special suhour event at the British Embassy, Lord Ahmad mingled with Egypt’s top business leaders, government officials, and civil society figures. He shared insights on celebrating Ramadan in the UK and discussed how nations can live up to the spirit of the holy month.
On the human rights front, Lord Ahmad met with the family of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, calling for immediate consular access and his release. This matter was raised directly with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. He also discussed the case of Karim Ennarah in a separate meeting.
UK Backs Egypt in Tackling Gender Violence
Wrapping up his trip, Lord Ahmad met Egyptian actor and British Embassy social affairs ambassador Ahmed Hatem, alongside experts fighting gender-based violence. They discussed UK support for local initiatives through the ‘Laha wa Maha’ fund, which backs projects battling gender-based violence in Egypt.
Minister’s Take: Strengthening Strategic Partnership
“Ramadan teaches us to reflect on ourselves and our connections. The UK-Egypt partnership is deep and lasting,” Lord Ahmad said after his visit. “From easing tensions in the Middle East and tackling the climate crisis to boosting trade and investment, our bond is strategic.”
He added, “I met with Egypt’s leaders to drive positive change on global issues like the war in Ukraine and human rights. I was pleased to hear firsthand how the ‘Laha wa Maha’ fund has transformed lives here. As we move forward, we will focus on trade, aid, and human rights to strengthen our partnership for the benefit of both countries.”
