Kent Boosts Payments for Ukrainian Hosts Amid Cost Crunch

Kent County Council (KCC) has upped the monthly “thank you” payments for hosts sheltering Ukrainian refugees. Despite the Government’s fixed £350 rate, KCC is adding extra cash to help hosts battle soaring energy bills, food prices, and rising inflation.

Winter Worries Spark Payment Rise

With winter looming and the cost-of-living crisis biting hard, KCC feared many hosts wouldn’t afford to extend stays beyond six months. So, from late October until the Government scheme ends in March 2023, hosts will get a significant payment boost.

This hike applies to existing hosts and newcomers who pass checks. Plus, a hardship fund is ready for those needing extra support to keep providing refuge to Ukrainian guests.

Hosts supporting their guests beyond six months will also receive a £500 bonus in March 2023 to thank them for their ongoing generosity during tough times.

Kent Leads UK in Ukrainian Hosting

  • 3,871 people matched with 1,642 hosts – the most in any UK county
  • 2,927 Ukrainian guests have already arrived
  • Another 944 expected, with 2-3 new arrivals daily

KCC leader Roger Gough praised hosts, saying:

“The response from Kent residents to the plight of Ukrainian people fleeing their homes has been incredible. Increasing payments is only fair given their huge role in this humanitarian effort.”

He added:

“We hope this extra cash gives reassurance amid financial challenges and encourages more residents to host. We need more homes as arrivals continue daily.”

More Guests, Bigger Payouts

Many hosts accommodate multiple refugees. KCC’s scheme already factors in household size variations, meaning bigger groups attract bigger payments. The new monthly extra payments are:

Support Continues All Winter

KCC’s Homes for Ukraine support team will carry out visits throughout winter to check on hosts and guests. They urge hosts to speak up about any issues or extra help needed.
