Hero Police Dog Dies in Tragic Watermead Park Hunt
A brave police dog lost its life while helping officers track down a wanted man at Watermead Park, Birstall, on Wednesday, 3 July.
Suspect Flees Into Water – Police Dog Follows
Nottinghamshire Police were called to the park after reports the suspect was nearby. During the search, the police dog was deployed to help find the man.
The suspect tried to escape by plunging into the water. The police dog bravely followed but sadly became unresponsive while in the water. Despite emergency veterinary care, the dog tragically passed away.
Suspect Caught and Arrested
After a thorough search, officers found the 27-year-old suspect within the park and arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The man remains in police custody.
Investigation Ongoing as Police Seek Public Help
Nottinghamshire Police are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances of the dog’s death while also looking into the original offence that led to the search.
Detective Inspector Claire Hughes said: “This is an extremely sad incident that has resulted in the death of one of our police dogs. Our colleagues are supporting the dog’s handler during this difficult time, and our investigation is ongoing.”
