Portugal Bans Face Veils in Public with Hefty £3,475 Fines

Portugal has slammed the door shut on face veils worn for religious or gender reasons. Anyone caught rocking a burka or niqab in public faces fines up to €4,000 (£3,475).

The new ban targets full face coverings like the burka and niqab, which leaves only the eyes visible. But don’t worry—veils are still allowed on planes, in places of worship, and at diplomatic events.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is expected to sign the law but could still veto it or send it to the Constitutional Court for review.

Portugal Joins Europe’s Growing Club of Face Veil Bans

If the law holds, Portugal joins a growing list of European countries banning face veils—including France, Belgium, Austria, and the Netherlands.

Yet in Portugal, so few women wear these veils that many see the ban as more of a political message on immigration and culture than a reaction to a real problem.

Across Europe, however, Islamic face coverings have sparked heated debates, with governments citing security concerns, integration challenges, and women’s rights.

Italy Poised to Copy Portugal with Burka Crackdown

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is pushing for a similar burka ban to fight what she calls “Islamic separatism.” Her Brothers of Italy party wants fines over £2,500 for veil wearers in schools, shops, and offices.

“The law against Islamic separatism is vital to protect Italian identity, citizen safety, and women’s freedom,” said the party.

They insist the ban isn’t about curbing religious freedom, but stopping its misuse to enforce practices clashing with Italy’s constitution.

UK Enters the Burka Debate

The burka row is crossing the Channel too. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage branded the burka “anti-British” and called for a national debate on banning face coverings.

“I don’t like to see the burka. It probably is anti-British in the sense that I don’t know if they’re being forced to cover up,” Farage said.

MPs like Sarah Pochin have pushed for a full ban citing “public safety,” but UK governments have so far held back to avoid backlash over religious freedom and civil rights.

Europe’s Patchy Map of Veil Bans and Legal Battles

  • France kicked off Europe’s face veil bans in 2011, with Belgium following suit the same year.
  • The Netherlands, Austria, and Denmark introduced various bans between 2017 and 2019.
  • Germany, Spain, and Switzerland have local restrictions, with Switzerland’s 2021 ban including exceptions for health and weather.

The European Court of Human Rights has mostly upheld these bans, though opinions remain divided.

Critics slam the bans as discriminatory attacks on Muslim women. Supporters argue they improve integration, security, and protect women from coercion.

Portugal’s Tiny Muslim Population, Big Controversy

With less than 1% of its population Muslim, Portugal’s veil ban mostly sends a political message rather than solving a widespread issue.

The Muslim community mainly hails from former African colonies like Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, plus North Africa and the Middle East.

The face veil debate is far from over as countries struggle to balance national identity, security, and religious freedom. Watch this space.
