Russian Dad Chooses Death Over Separation From Daughter

In a heartrending court scene in Tula, Russia, Alexei Moskalyov declared he would rather face the death penalty than live apart from his teenage daughter. The father’s agony unfolded during an appeal hearing on Monday, gripping onlookers with his raw emotions.

Anti-War Drawing Sparks Police Investigation

Moskalyov’s troubles began after his 12-year-old daughter, Masha, drew a chilling anti-war picture showing Russian missiles hitting a Ukrainian mother and child. The school promptly alerted the authorities, triggering a police investigation.

Earlier this year, Moskalyov was slammed with a two-year sentence in a penal colony for “discrediting” the Russian military through his online comments criticizing Russia’s role in the Ukraine conflict.

Fled House Arrest, Caught and Extradited

Refusing to accept his fate quietly, Moskalyov fled house arrest in Yefremov and sought safety in Belarus. But Belarusian officials didn’t hesitate to hand him straight back to Russian authorities. Despite his bold escape, the courts showed no mercy.

Emotional Plea Falls on Deaf Ears

“My heart bleeds every day,” Moskalyov told the court, his voice thick with pain. “I would rather face death than be separated from my daughter.”

However, the judges refused his plea, upholding the original two-year prison term and slapping on a two-year ban from using the internet. His lawyer, Vladimir Biliyenko, said Moskalyov’s emotions were genuine, calling Masha his “reason for living”.

Though separated, father and daughter continue to write heartfelt letters. At the hearing, Moskalyov read a touching note from Masha, calling him “the best father in the world” and promising they’d be reunited no matter what – prompting tears in the courtroom.

Battle for Justice Continues

Biliyenko revealed Moskalyov could be sent to a penal colony at any moment but vowed to appeal relentlessly. “We will fight until the very end,” he said.

This tragic case has captured international attention, highlighting the brutal crackdowns on dissent within Russia and the emotional toll on families caught in the crossfire of war and state repression.
