Asian Hornets on the Rise: Urgent UK Warning After Multiple Sightings
The UK government has sounded the alarm after spotting invasive Asian hornets multiple times in just the past week. This recent surge is a red flag, with three new sightings pushing the total past five already recorded in 2024.
Deadly Pest Spreading Fast from France to the UK
Originally landing in France back in 2004, Asian hornets have been creeping across Europe and causing havoc. The UK has been seeing these stinging invaders since 2016, but 2023 was grim — their venomous stings contributed to at least five deaths in France alone.
These aggressive predators are a nightmare for native species. A single hornet can chow down on up to 50 honey bees daily, threatening the crucial pollinators that keep our ecosystems and farms alive.
What to Do if You Spot an Asian Hornet
Asian hornets are easy to spot thanks to their yellow legs and dark brown or black bodies. They tend to hang around bee hives, especially in southern England, from February through November.
- Stay calm and don’t provoke the insect.
- If stung, wash the area with soap and cool water immediately.
- Apply ice to reduce swelling.
- Seek medical help if you have trouble breathing or show allergic reactions.
Jay Riggs from Zeal CBD warns: “Their sting feels like a red-hot needle stabbing you — expect severe pain and swelling.”
Help Stop the Spread – Report Sightings Fast
The UK government urges everyone, particularly those in southern England, Wales, and near major ports, to report any suspected Asian hornet sightings without delay. Vigilance is key to protecting native bees and preventing this invasive menace from taking hold.
