Exclusive Historic Portsmouth Pub sold to developers

In a shocking announcement made just after 3pm this afternoon, the landlord of one of Portsmouth’s oldest pubs has confirm its sudden demise – in just two days! Landlord and local businessman Kevin Smith made a short statement simply saying, “After 160 years as a pub The RMA Tavern has succumbed to developers and will close in two days. “Big Thank You to all customers past and present, you will all be missed.” Kev went on to add, “All Tables, Chairs, Benches, Mirrors, Fixtures & Fittings are now for sale so “Come on down” maybe something you need.” The pub – originally a Blakes of Gosport then Brickwoods bar – had up until recent times been owned by Fullers but the brewing giant sold it to concentrate on other, more profitable, properties in their portfolio. Despite strong objections from both local residents and Portsmouth City Council’s City Engineers the developers were awarded planning permission to convert the site, which contains both the pub, garden and a quirky outhouse function room. This is the second public house and live music venue lost in Cromwell Road with the departure two years ago of the Eastney Cellars – also to developers. The Royal Marines Artillery Tavern, as the name would suggest, was a firm favourite with the marines billeted at the neighbouring Eastney Barracks in its heyday. It is certainly a sad day for Eastney, but also for the city as a whole, to lose such an historic landmark as well as venue.
