Historic Portsmouth Pub Sold to Developers – Closes in Just Two Days!
In a bombshell announcement this afternoon, Kevin Smith, landlord of one of Portsmouth’s oldest pubs, confirmed The RMA Tavern will shut its doors in just two days.
160 Years of History Ends Overnight
Kevin Smith, a local businessman, said simply, “After 160 years as a pub The RMA Tavern has succumbed to developers and will close in two days.” He added a heartfelt message to loyal customers: “Big Thank You to all customers past and present, you will all be missed.”
Everything Must Go – Pub Fixtures Up for Sale
In a final twist, Kev revealed all pub furniture and fittings are now up for grabs. “All Tables, Chairs, Benches, Mirrors, Fixtures & Fittings are now for sale so ‘Come on down’ maybe something you need,” he urged.
From Marines’ Favourite to Redevelopment Site
- The RMA Tavern started life as a Blakes of Gosport, then a Brickwoods bar, before being owned by brewing giant Fullers.
- Fullers sold the site to focus on more profitable ventures, paving the way for the developers.
- Despite fierce protests from local residents and Portsmouth City Council’s engineers, planning permission was granted for redevelopment.
- The site includes the pub, its garden, and a quirky outhouse function room.
This marks the second blow to Cromwell Road’s pub scene in two years, following the closure of the Eastney Cellars, also lost to developers.
Known formally as the Royal Marines Artillery Tavern, the pub was once a firm favourite with marines from nearby Eastney Barracks. Its closure is a major loss to the local community and Portsmouth’s heritage.
A sad day for Eastney — and for the city’s historic pub culture.
