Fake Cop Targets Hackney Residents in Three Shocking Heists
The Met Police are hunting a brazen imposter who has swindled three victims in just 24 hours by pretending to be an undercover cop. The suspect approached men on Hackney streets, demanding ID before stealing wallets, phones, and bank cards.
Three Scams in One Day
- First raid: Early hours of Sunday, April 8, around 1:25am in Alvington Crescent, E8. The thief made off with a wallet.
- Second strike: That evening, between 5pm and 6pm in Evering Road, N16. He forced the victim to confirm their identity, then stole a bank card and phone.
- Final attack: Just before 4am on Monday, April 9, near Willow Cottages, N16. The suspect demanded a search, assaulted the victim, and nabbed their phone and wallet.
Police Warn: Genuine Cops Always Show ID
Detective Constable Mark Longley of Hackney CID said: “A genuine police officer will always identify themselves using an official warrant card. This will always be in their possession and available for inspection, whether or not they are in uniform.”
He added: “Members of the public can call 101 to confirm any police officer’s identity. We’re working hard to catch this man and ask everyone to stay alert and report if approached.”
