Ryde Police Adopt Post Offices to Stay Close to the Community

After closing their local police station in June 2014 due to low footfall, Ryde’s Neighbourhood Policing Team is making a clever comeback — by adopting two Post Offices in town!

Meet Your Local Cops at Ryde Post Offices

From Tuesday 7 August, officers will drop by McColl’s on Union Street between 2pm and 3:30pm, and on Thursday 9 August, they’ll be based at Mellishs on High Street at the same times. These beat surgeries will run fortnightly, giving residents a regular chance to talk face-to-face with their local police.

Post Office Partnership is a Win for Community Safety

This move is part of the national ‘adopt a Post Office’ scheme, championed across the UK, linking police forces with Post Offices to boost local engagement. On the Isle of Wight, this has proven a hit since 2016, with PCSO Steve Oatley already incorporating Post Offices in Godshill, Niton, Chale Green, and Whitwell into his patrols.

Sandown Bay’s team joined in, adopting Shanklin’s Post Office in 2018. Officers say the scheme’s a brilliant way to reach all walks of life — especially vulnerable groups — with crucial crime prevention tips.

Why This Scheme Works

  • Offers a trusted, familiar spot for locals to meet their officers regularly.
  • Provides face-to-face contact, boosting community trust and reassurance.
  • Helps fight scams and fraud by talking directly to those withdrawing money at the counter.
  • Makes crime prevention advice accessible with dedicated info displays.
  • Engages those not on social media or uncomfortable online.
  • Helps police pick up on local concerns like anti-social behaviour often going unreported.

Ryde’s police are proving that while the station may be gone, their commitment to community safety is alive and well — right where the locals are.
