Scam Alert in Portsmouth: Charity Fraudsters Strike Twice
Hampshire police are hunting crooks behind two slick distraction burglaries in Portsmouth. The culprits posed as charity collectors to trick their victims out of cash and cards.
Wheelie Charmer Hits Twice in Liss Road
The first con unfolded at an address on Liss Road where a man turned up on February 9, pretending to collect money for charity. He returned the next evening, claiming to update the homeowner on the donations raised.
While chatting, the scammer swiped a wallet from a coat pocket in the hallway—clever and quick.
£800 Ripped Off After Purse Theft
The next day at around midday on February 11, a similar trick took place. Another man, again posing as a collector, stole a purse containing £30 and several bank cards. Those cards were soon put to use, racking up £800 in fraudulent transactions.
Police Nab Suspect & Warn Public
A 42-year-old Portsmouth man is now in custody, facing charges of two burglaries and possession of a class A drug.
“Never open your door to strangers or unexpected visitors. Always verify who they are,” Police warned. “Genuine callers will show ID or return when someone else is home with you.”
