Search for Sewer Collapse Hits Snag
Despite overnight efforts, engineers have failed to pinpoint the spot of a major sewer collapse. Drainage experts deployed specialist cameras to ‘walk’ the pipe, but debris blocked the cobra’s path, stalling progress.
Jetting Attempts and Waste Removal Underway
Specialists tried jetting the affected sewer section through the night, but it’s done little good. The collapse lies somewhere along a 128-metre stretch of a century-old sewer network serving thousands of homes.
Gully suckers worked round the clock, clearing vast amounts of backed-up waste from the blocked section on a busy main road. Rush hour took a hammering with heavy delays reported on Fairlee Road and Coppin Bridge.
Road Closure to Continue as Repairs Loom
Southern Water confirmed the issue stems from a collapsed pipe two metres underground. They’re deploying specialist gear to fix the problem and aim to complete repairs by end of Thursday.
The road will remain shut until work finishes, with no reopening expected today.
