Dog Saves Family From Blaze as Wheelie Bin Fire Spreads to Home
A quick-thinking family dog in Margate raised the alarm after a wheelie bin fire exploded into a house blaze on Canterbury Road. Thanks to the pooch’s early warning barks, the owners escaped safely before firefighters arrived.
Flames Ignite From Cigarette Butts
Kent Fire and Rescue Service rushed two engines to the scene. Firefighters doused the flames with a hose reel jet, stopping the fire from causing more damage. The blaze reportedly started when still-hot cigarette butts were tossed into the bin, sparking the fire.
The fire spread from the first bin to a second, and then to an electrical box on the side of the property. Smoke filled the cupboard under the stairs, triggering the dog’s frantic barking even before the smoke alarms began blaring.
Fire Safety Tips From Fire Chief
Jon Quinn, KFRS Assistant Director for Customer Safety and Engagement, stressed the dangers. “Tobacco burns at very high temperatures – it’s designed to stay lit. This is why cigarettes can very quickly start a fire.”
He warned smokers to never leave lit cigarettes, cigars, or pipes unattended, and to always ensure they’re fully extinguished before disposal. “Always use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over and is made from non-flammable materials. Better yet, put your ashtrays outside before bed or going out.”
Quinn also advised against storing wheelie bins close to windows and doors, as fires in bins can easily spread to homes.
Stay Safe – Don’t Let Your Bin Go Up in Flames
- Never discard hot cigarette butts directly into bins.
- Use heavy, stable ashtrays made from fireproof materials.
- Place ashtrays outside, especially overnight or when away.
- Keep wheelie bins away from your home’s windows and doors.
- Be alert to pet behaviour—dogs may spot smoke before alarms.
In Margate, this alert dog’s quick action prevented a potentially devastating fire. Let this be a warning – always torch-proof your smoking habits and bin placement.
