Drunken Rage Ends in Tragedy: Wayne Packer Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter
Wayne Packer, 31, of Arlington Road, NW1, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 50-year-old Peter O’Loughlin. The shocking admission came at Wood Green Crown Court on Tuesday, 10 December. Sentencing is set for 23 January 2020.
Violent Attack on Holloway Road
The brutal assault took place on the night of Tuesday, 4 June. Peter O’Loughlin had just arrived by bus at Holloway Road, N7. Meanwhile, a heavily intoxicated Packer was wandering nearby on 1 Road.
Unaware he’d dropped his phone, Packer suddenly spotted Peter and wrongly accused him of theft. What followed was a horrific attack. Peter, already in poor health and visibly frail, was punched to the ground. Packer then launched a relentless assault, kicking and punching Peter as he struggled to stand.
Helpless Victim and Frightened Bystanders
Passers-by tried to step in, but Packer threatened them, implying he had a knife before storming off. When police arrived, Peter showed no obvious injuries and said he’d head to hospital himself. But his condition quickly worsened. Scans later revealed a life-threatening brain bleed.
Peter fought for his life in hospital but sadly died from his injuries on 26 June.
Manhunt and Guilty Plea
Police launched a swift investigation and arrested Packer on 1 July. He denied any involvement in the fight and refused to answer questions, despite CCTV evidence. Facing a murder trial, Packer shocked the court by offering a manslaughter plea on day one — which was accepted.
“Wayne Packer was heavily intoxicated that night, to the point that he did not realise he had dropped his phone,” said Detective Sergeant Kerry Burgess. “In a drunken rage, he appears to have taken his anger out on the first person he saw – unfortunately this was Peter O’Loughlin, a frail man in poor health.”
“Peter could not offer any resistance to Packer’s cowardly assault – he was an innocent man who died as a result of a truly senseless attack.”
