A huge police operation unfolded in central London today after thousands descended on the capital to protest. The Metropolitan Police had imposed strict conditions ahead of the demonstrations to keep public safety top priority.
Weapons and Violence Spark Tough Police Response
Officers activated a section 60 authority after receiving intelligence that some protesters were armed. While many complied with police instructions, there were violent clashes aimed at officers throughout the day.
- Five arrests made by 5pm: offences include violent disorder, assault on police, offensive weapons, class A drugs possession, and drunk & disorderly behaviour.
- Six police officers suffered minor injuries during the unrest.

“Thousands have travelled to London despite being asked not to and some of those have been intent on causing harm,” said Commander Bas Javid. “We understand why people want to express their concerns and have worked hard to keep people safe.” “Many have listened to officers and behaved as requested, but some have ignored safety conditions, risking everyone’s wellbeing.” “Violence against officers is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.” “From 5pm, protests must end. We will deploy tactics to disperse those remaining, which may include further arrests.” “My message to anyone still in central London: go home.”
