Community Hero Jailed for Abusing Boys with Bogus ‘Punishments’
Christopher Richards, once hailed a local hero in Cullompton, has been jailed for crudely punishing boys as young as seven. The 53-year-old invented petty excuses to abuse his victims, forcing them to strip down before smacking or rubbing their bottoms.
Horrific Abuse Under the Guise of Discipline
- Richards hit one boy so hard it hurt to sit afterwards.
- He even wetted his hand to make the spanking sting more.
- The supposed “offences” included minor slip ups like painting outside the lines, getting a splinter, or connecting a battery wrong.
- One boy was punished merely for overhearing a friend whisper if Richards was a paedophile, a word the child didn’t even understand.
Trusted Community Figure Used as Cover
Richards cynically exploited his good standing in Cullompton. He chaired local groups and charities, was active in the Parent, Teachers and Friends Association at a primary school, and a member of the Culm Local Action Group. A former retained firefighter, he earned a Community Hero Award in 2012, presented by ex-footballer Fabrice Muamba for saving a man’s life.
Decades of Deception and Abuse
The abuse stretches back to Richards’ time as a scout leader in Northamptonshire during the 1980s. After relocating to Devon, he continued, often punishing boys after football or cricket sessions. Victims revealed serious psychological damage, lost trust in authority, and struggle in daily life. One tearfully confronted him in court, saying:
“When I saw you, I used to crumble. I am here today to see you crumble. You are a bad man. You act in public as someone who does good but in reality, you are twisted. You stole my childhood and have ruined my life.”
Justice Served
Richards pleaded guilty to 12 counts of child cruelty. Exeter Crown Court Judge Timothy Rose sentenced him to five years and three months behind bars. The judge slammed him for inventing excuses to isolate and abuse children:
“You had no right or lawful purpose for your behaviour. You deliberately engineered situations to avoid being reported. Your status in the community was exploited to commit these offences.” “You pretended to punish but were doing it for your own gratification.”
Richards has also been hit with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, banning all contact with children once released.
