Seven Nigerians Held Over Dramatic Nave Andromeda Hijack Bid
Southampton Magistrates Court has approved a further custody extension for seven Nigerian men arrested following a tense standoff on the oil tanker Nave Andromeda off the Isle of Wight.
The men face charges under the Aviation and Maritime and Security Act 1990, suspected of seizing or controlling the ship through threats or force. They will remain in custody until Thursday evening, October 29.
How Long Can Police Keep Suspects Locked Up?
- Initial questioning allowed for 24 hours after arrest.
- Police can apply for 12 additional hours with senior officer approval.
- Further extensions require a judge’s approval at court.
- Maximum custody time allowed is 96 hours.
Special Boat Service Ends Hostage Drama
The drama unfolded on Sunday at 10:04am when concerns were raised about the crew’s safety onboard the Nave Andromeda. Reports emerged that stowaways were threatening the crew, forcing them into lockdown.
The stand-off ended when the elite Special Boat Service stormed the vessel and regained control.
All 22 crew members are safe and cooperating with investigations. Meanwhile, 11 Albanian stowaways were found aboard a separate ship docked in Southampton earlier today.
