Arsonist Jailed for 10 Years After Setting Woman’s Home and Car Ablaze
Christopher Lane, 30, has been locked up for a decade after deliberately setting fire to a woman’s home and car in St Helens. The terrifying domestic attack happened last May, leaving the victim and her young children traumatised.
Fiery Attack in Clock Face Area
At 4am on 18 May 2020, emergency services rushed to a house in the Clock Face area following reports of a vehicle and front door being deliberately set alight. The blaze destroyed the car and damaged the home, but thankfully no one was physically harmed.
Lane, of no fixed address but originally from Whiston, had been in a short relationship with the victim. She had tried to end things, but Lane’s threats and violent behaviour escalated dangerously.
Lane Caught and Sentenced
Police later found Lane in Warrington and arrested him. At Liverpool Crown Court on Monday 11 January 2021, he was sentenced to 10 years for arson with intent to endanger life, witness intimidation, and possession of cannabis.
“This was an appalling incident which left the victim deeply traumatised and in fear for her safety and that of her children,” said Detective Constable Lesley Prendergast. “Lane’s act of setting the front door on fire was a deliberate attempt to trap those inside. It’s horrendous that young children were exposed to such danger.”
“Lane initially pleaded not guilty, dragging out the victim’s ordeal before finally admitting guilt. We thank her for her bravery and hope this sentence offers some comfort.”
Police Urge Victims to Speak Out
Detective Prendergast added, “Domestic abuse takes many forms. We have specially trained officers and work with charities to support victims. If you or someone you know is suffering, please come forward. We want to help.”
For emergencies, victims are advised to call 999 or use the textphone service 18000. Non-emergency reports can be made safely at local police stations, with translation support available.
