Police Scotland Enjoys Big Boost in Public Confidence During Pandemic
Majority Feel Safe Despite Covid Chaos
Police Scotland has scored strong public backing throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, with 84% of Scots feeling safe in their local areas, according to the “Your Police” 2020/21 survey. The survey, launched in April 2020, attracted over 36,500 responses from across Scotland, giving the force vital insight into community concerns and priorities during a turbulent year.
Confidence Soars Amid Lockdowns
Public confidence in Police Scotland jumped to 57% during the survey period, a nine-point rise since before Covid. Key factors shaping this increase were local Covid transmission rates and the strict national lockdown imposed in January. The public’s trust was tested but ultimately grew as Police Scotland adapted quickly to the evolving crisis.
How Police Scotland Stepped Up
- Boosted Patrols: Officers increased their presence at key spots, especially in rural areas worried about visitors from high-risk virus zones.
- New Tech: The force rolled out online reporting for Covid regulation breaches and launched video calls for public meetings and appointments, keeping contact safe and accessible.
- Community Connections: Police Scotland engaged with 250+ organisations to better support those with disabilities coping with social distancing and mask-wearing challenges.
Listening to All Voices
On May 19, Police Scotland will co-host an event focusing on building trust with “seldom heard” communities to improve support further. Meanwhile, monthly confidence trackers for each Local Policing Division help tailor local policing strategies and increase accountability.
Deputy Chief Constable Will Kerr said, “Despite extraordinary challenges, Police Scotland has maintained high public confidence. The strong bond we share with communities has been crucial for reassurance during this difficult time. The ‘Your Police’ survey—largest in the UK on policing and Covid—allowed us to respond to issues rapidly and adapt policing nationally and locally.”
Public Praise Police Performance
Those who reported or witnessed crime gave the cops a thumbs up: over 70% were satisfied with their experience. Even better, 80%+ approved of how call operators and officers treated them, and 87% felt their needs were fully understood.
DCC Kerr added, “Thanks to the public for their overwhelming support and cooperation. Our officers will continue to balance discretion with enforcement to keep everyone safe.”
