Man Admits Killing Hotel Receptionist in Bournemouth
Stephen Cole, 32, from Bournemouth, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility at Winchester Crown Court on 4 May 2021. He was sentenced just weeks later, on 1 June 2021, receiving a hospital order with no time limit.
Tragic Death at Travelodge Hotel
At around 8am on 19 December 2020, police were called to the Travelodge on Christchurch Road after a woman was found dead. The victim was 27-year-old Marta Elena Vento, a Spanish national working as a receptionist at the hotel.
Just 20 minutes later, Cole turned himself in at Bournemouth police station. He confessed to killing someone and carried a bag containing blood-stained clothes, keys, and a lanyard linked to Marta.
Mental Health Assessment and Investigation
Cole was arrested and interviewed, admitting he caused Marta’s death. Mental health experts assessed him, and he was detained under the Mental Health Act. He remained under care throughout the court process.
The post-mortem on 10 December revealed Marta died from multiple blunt force injuries.
Police and Family React
Detective Chief Inspector Jez Noyce said: “This was a tragic case where a young woman lost her life. Our thoughts remain with Marta’s family and friends. I thank everyone involved in the investigation who helped bring Cole to justice.”
Marta’s family released a statement: “Marta was a hardworking and responsible young woman with a good heart who brought joy to those around her. Nothing can repair the pain caused by this man’s actions. We will honour Marta’s memory by seeking the truth behind her tragic death.”
