Bus Smashes Into Shop and Substation
Firefighters rushed to Selwyn Avenue, Chingford, this morning after a double-decker bus smashed into an end-of-terrace shop with flats above and an electrical substation. The crash sparked chaos and forced emergency crews into action.
Driver Trapped and Rescued with Specialist Gear
The bus driver was trapped by serious injuries inside the wreckage. Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to free him before he was rushed to hospital. A number of other passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Emergency Services Co-ordinated To Secure Scene
Station Commander Dave Hill said: “Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to release the driver of the bus. Crews worked with colleagues from London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police and made the scene safe.”
He added: “Firefighters carried out a thorough search of nearby buildings to ensure no one else was trapped. We asked people to avoid the Selwyn Avenue and Winchester Road area due to road closures.”
Quick Response Ends Incident by Late Morning
The brigade was called at 8.22am. Two fire engines from Chingford and Woodford and a rescue unit from Edmonton fire station were deployed. The incident wrapped up for firefighters by 10.07am, restoring calm to the area.
