An Uninsured Driver Who Attempted To Fool Police With Fake Documentation Has Been Warned Expect Jail If He Offends Again

Eesa Ahmed, aged 21, was pulled over by officers in New Basford on 21 March 2020 and found to have no insurance. Ahmed, who had been driving a black BMW 5 Series registered to a member of his family, was issued with a standard traffic offence report and asked to provide proof of insurance. He later sent over what appeared to be a valid certificate but was exposed when his apparent insurer found no record of his policy number. Later analysis of his mobile phone revealed that he had arranged to pay an unnamed contact to provide him with a false certificate covering the day he was driving. Ahmed, of Noel Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, later admitted to an offence of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance. Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday he was given a 34 week prison sentence suspended for two years. Inspector Dave Mather, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Had this young man simply admitted to having no insurance he could have taken his punishment, learned from his mistake and got on with the rest of his life. Instead, he deliberatively set out to deceive by providing a fake insurance certificate. “He may have thought this a low-risk ploy to dodge a fine but in reality was committing an extremely serious criminal offence by attempting to pervert the course of justice. “I am pleased he has now been punished and also hope this case sends out a clear warning to others about the potential consequences of lying to the police.”
