RNLI Hero Jai: From Tea Maker to Lifesaver Legend

Jai’s RNLI journey began at Rye Harbour when he was just 15, making tea and cleaning the station thanks to his great uncle, the Hon. Sec. On his 17th birthday, Jai officially joined the crew—and he’s never looked back.

Family Ties and Lifesaving Blood

Jai’s motivation to join the RNLI is steeped in family history. His great grandmother lost relatives in the tragic Mary Stanford disaster. The Rye Harbour station reopened in 1966 with his grandfather and uncles as original crew members. His father served on the crew and as station treasurer, while his grandmother, Betty Broocks, raised funds for 55 years. “I remember hearing the maroons and racing to watch the boat launch—saving lives has always been in our blood,” Jai said.

From Rookie to Helmsman: Rising Through the Ranks

After years gaining experience at Rye Harbour, Jai passed out as a Helmsman in 2005. Former helm Trevor Bryant praised him: “Jai was utterly professional, passing on dedication and love of the RNLI. His greatest strength was training and motivating the crew. He inspired many to be the very best.”

A Rescue That Changed Everything

One unforgettable mission was aiding a trimaran with a damaged hull in rough seas. Jai, then not a helmsman, was trusted to take the wheel. They rescued four casualties, transferred them to Dungeness Lifeboat, and helped prevent the trimaran from capsizing. “That teamwork boosted my confidence. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Jai recalls.

London Calling: New Challenges at Tower Station

In 2007, Jai moved to the Thames, volunteering at Chiswick lifeboat station to gain river experience. By 2012, he secured a full-time contract at Tower lifeboat station. Tower Commander Mike Neild described Jai as “one of the most selfless, conscientious professionals” he’s met—someone both firm and thoughtful, valued on and off duty.

Farewell to Rye Harbour, Commitment to the Cause

Jai shared heartfelt goodbyes: “I’ll always treasure my memories at Rye Harbour. It’s sad to leave, but living and working in London means priorities have shifted. I remain committed to volunteering with the RNLI—supporting crew wellbeing and offering water safety advice in central London.”

Jai’s story shows true dedication runs deep in RNLI bloodlines—and he’s still making waves in the capital.
