Ilford Man Found Guilty of Murdering Toddler in Shocking Abuse Case
Syed Mohammed Kamran Haider, 40, from Colinton Road, Ilford, has been found guilty at the Old Bailey of murdering toddler Nusayba Bint-Umar. The little girl suffered fatal head injuries at Haider’s home. Sentencing is set for Wednesday, 30 March.
Promise of Puppy Care Turned to Domestic Nightmare
Nusayba’s mother met Haider on a dating website in August 2019. She and her daughter moved in with him, enticed by a promised financial reward for helping raise puppies. Instead, the household was plagued by domestic violence and threats aimed at her mother.
On 28 August 2019, Haider was left in charge of Nusayba. He called her mother claiming the child had hurt herself. When the mother returned, Nusayba was found with severe head injuries and swelling. Haider refused to call an ambulance and only suggested putting her in a baby pen. Eventually, a taxi was called and Nusayba was taken to an east London hospital.
Final Days Filled with Fear and Abuse
On 13 September, neighbours heard Nusayba crying and a slap after Haider told her to “shh”. Her mother became increasingly alarmed and called an ambulance from a bus stop after leaving the house. Nusayba was rushed to hospital, later transferred to a specialist unit in central London. Haider was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but was released on bail pending investigation.
The toddler’s condition worsened, and she tragically died in hospital at 6pm on 17 September. A post-mortem confirmed death from a traumatic head injury, believed to have been inflicted by Haider during the incident on 13 September.
Mother’s Heartbreaking Tribute
“Nusayba was subjected to the most horrible experiences. I will never forget the events leading to her death,” said her mother. “That noise she made on her last day will haunt me forever.”
“I’ll never see her grow up, hear her first words, witness milestones every parent cherishes. Simple things like holding her, tickling her, or buying a toy are gone forever. These memories now break my heart every day.”
Detective Praises Team, Demands Justice
Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith, who led the investigation, said: “Haider is a controlling and violent man prone to extreme aggression. Nusayba suffered a fatal attack while in his care.”
“Though the exact events on 13 September aren’t fully clear, the injuries were no accident — Haider caused them. Nusayba’s family will grieve for years, and we’ll support them every step of the way.”
“I commend my officers for their tireless work which secured this conviction. We expect Haider to spend a long time behind bars where he belongs.”
