Man Charged with Manslaughter After Halloween Assault That Killed Dad
Philip, 43, was viciously attacked while trick-or-treating with his family on Leigh Broadway last Halloween. He was rushed to hospital but tragically died two days later.
Suspect’s Charges Upgraded After Philip’s Death
Daniel Ballard, 31, from Lincoln Close, Southend, was originally arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, actual bodily harm, and common assault. After Philip’s death, the charge was upgraded to manslaughter.
Ballard Pleads Guilty in Southend Crown Court
At Southend Crown Court today, Ballard pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He is set to be sentenced on 20 July.
Police Praise Family’s Strength Amid Tragedy
“This is a tragic case and my thoughts go to Philip’s partner and children,” said Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, who led the investigation.
“Philip’s death has had an enormous impact on them and I want to praise the courage they have shown throughout the investigation.
“No conviction will ever bring him back but I hope knowing Ballard has been brought to justice will help them move forward.”
