Firefighting Legend Paul Scoops MBE for Life-Saving Work

Paul has earned himself an MBE for over 50 years of blazing a trail in firefighting and fire engineering. This fiery honour recognises his tireless efforts to make homes and workplaces safer, particularly in high-rise buildings.

Innovator and Industry Pioneer

Known as a top expert, Paul has revolutionised fire tactics and safety protocols. His game-changing ideas have been adopted by fire services worldwide, putting lives first every step of the way.

“I am genuinely honoured and sincerely glad that I should be thought of and recognised in this way,” Paul said. “Protecting people has been the focus of my work for my entire life.”

He added, “This award is for all the incredible people at the kent.fire-uk.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kent Fire and Rescue Service who risk their lives daily to keep the county safe.”

Trailblazing Fire Safety Initiatives

  • Paul developed a tactical stairwell protection policy to secure escape routes in tower block fires.
  • He pioneered early evacuation decision-making for fire officers, saving precious time when it counts most.
  • His work has raised building safety standards and dramatically improved emergency response.

Giving Back Beyond the Fireground

Paul’s generosity extends beyond the UK firefighting scene. In the 1990s, he volunteered to help civilians in war-torn Iraq and Bosnia. Plus, he donates royalties from his acclaimed books Fog Attack and Euro Firefighter to charities supporting burn survivors.

Thanks to his donations of over £10,000, two adult burn survivors took part in a pioneering rehabilitation programme.

Ann Millington, CEO of Kansas Fire & Rescue Service, praised Paul as “a motivational professional and role model who raises standards across the fire sector.”

Despite his many achievements, Paul insists he’ll always feel most at home on a fire engine — the place where his incredible journey began at just 18 years old.
