Heroic RNLI Lifeguards Rescue Struggling Dog at Rye Harbour
A tense dog rescue unfolded at Rye Harbour on Sunday morning (5 June), when members of the public spotted a distressed pooch struggling in the water. Fearing the owner might dive in to save their furry friend, they called HM Coastguard for help.
Lifeguards Race to the Rescue
RNLI lifeguards Owain and Peter jumped into action, driving their 4WD patrol truck to Rye Harbour after spotting the dog. With advice from supervisor Leon Driver, they quickly located the struggling pet and intervened.
They swiftly warned the owner not to enter the treacherous water and asked for the dog’s name. The harbour’s eastern side slopes sharply, so the lifeguards gently guided the dog, Coco, to swim back safely to shore.
Cold but Safe: The Emotional Reunion
Coco was visibly cold and shivering on arrival. Lifeguard Owain wrapped him in a warm fleece, bringing the exhausted pooch back to the Camber West lifeguard station. The worried owner was eventually reunited with Coco in the Western car park, relief written all over their faces.
“I’m really happy we rescued Coco and kept him warm while also ensuring the owner stayed safe,” Owain said. “But please, never jump into water after your pet. Move to a safe spot and call 999 or 112 for the Coastguard if your dog can’t get out.”
Gratitude and Giving Back
In a touching gesture, Coco’s owner left a thank you card and brownies for the lifeguards at Camber Sands beach. She has also vowed to raise funds for both the RNLI and HM Coastguard in recognition of their life-saving efforts.
