Tube Mobile Coverage Set to Go Nationwide by 2024

Good news for Londoners! All mobile networks now work in the Jubilee line tunnels from Westminster to Canning Town. TfL has confirmed that Bank, Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Euston, and Camden Town will be the next five stations to get full mobile coverage as part of a major expansion.

BAI Communications to Fund £1 Billion Mobile Upgrade

The upgrade comes thanks to a 20-year deal where BAI Communications foots the bill, at no cost to TfL, while TfL earns revenue from the contract. BAI started converting the Jubilee line’s trial network into a permanent setup and is now expanding coverage across the entire London Underground.

TfL promises that after the first five stations go live, more Central line stations in the City and West End will have mobile coverage by summer 2023. They’re also working to extend service on the Elizabeth line between Paddington and Abbey Wood.

All Major Networks Onboard for Full Tube Coverage

Initially, only Three and EE agreed to extend their mobile coverage beyond the Jubilee line. Now, Vodafone and O2 have also signed up, meaning all four major UK mobile operators will soon deliver 4G on the Tube—no more underground blackspots.

Plus, Virgin Media’s station Wi-Fi network will be handed over to BAI from April, streamlining connectivity across TfL.

“I’m delighted that all four major mobile operators are set to provide high-speed, uninterrupted 4G coverage on the Tube,” said Shashi Verma, TfL’s Chief Technology Officer. “We are working hard with BAI Communications to bring these upgrades online by the end of the year, so passengers can stay connected underground.”

Emergency Services Network and Future-Proofing London’s Connectivity

BAI’s neutral host network will also support the new Emergency Services Network (ESN), giving first responders instant access to crucial data, images, and info during emergencies.

The £1 billion Connected London programme will not only improve mobile coverage underground but also install a full-fibre network linking buildings and street assets like traffic lights and lampposts. These will house small transmitter cells to boost 4G and 5G across the city.

By the end of 2024, London’s Tube is expected to have seamless mobile coverage in every station and tunnel, revolutionising underground travel for millions.
