Paedophile Raymond Ellis’ prison sentence boosted after police fight back
Raymond Ellis was jailed for five years in May 2022 for an appalling indecent assault committed over 30 years ago. But South Yorkshire Police’s Major Incident Review Team (MIRT) branded the punishment far too soft and launched an appeal to ramp it up.
Police say original sentence “too lenient”
“I am pleased the Court of Appeal agreed with us that Ellis’ sentence was too light,” said Dave Stopford, head of MIRT. “His crime was horrific, and justice demanded more.”
Victim suffered decades of trauma
Ellis’ victim was just 17 when the assault happened. For more than three decades, she lived in torment — never knowing who attacked her.
“Thanks to breakthroughs in forensic tech, the hard work of our officers, and specialist scientists, we finally identified Ellis and brought him to justice,” Stopford added.
Justice served after 30 years
“The victim has borne the trauma of sexual assault for 30 years,” Stopford said. “Ellis’ original sentence barely reflected the crime’s gravity or the victim’s ordeal. It was right to challenge and strengthen the punishment.”
Following a July 29 Court of Appeal hearing, Ellis faces a longer stretch behind bars as police remain determined to deliver justice.
