Princess Anne Honours Lifeboat Legend with MBE at Windsor

Roger Cohen, a veteran RNLI volunteer, was handed his MBE by Princess Anne at Windsor Castle on Tuesday. The lifeboat operations manager has spent 40 years saving lives across London and Sussex.

RNLI Hero’s Four Decades of Service

Roger currently manages lifeboat operations at Brighton and Newhaven RNLI stations. He has also served as crew and helm at Brighton and Tower lifeboat stations—the latter being the RNLI’s busiest.

Under Roger’s leadership, Brighton RNLI became the UK’s first LGBT-accredited lifeboat station and proudly participated in Pride events.

A Day to Remember at Historic Windsor Castle

Roger discovered he was awarded the MBE back in January. The official investiture took place during the afternoon session at Windsor Castle, where he joined other big names like comedian Adam Hills and Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty.

“Walking through Windsor Castle, steeped in history and tradition—from Queen Victoria’s marble throne to priceless paintings—it was an incredible experience and a real honour,” Roger said.

“I even had a few minutes to chat with Princess Anne about my time at Tower lifeboat station on the River Thames. She understood the challenges of inner-city rescues and was incredibly supportive of volunteer efforts.”

Family Support Behind Lifesaving Bravery

Princess Anne’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, is a Vice President of the RNLI, adding royal connections to the charity’s work.

Roger was joined by his partner Alison—Brighton RNLI treasurer—and their children Jade and Jack for the ceremony.

“Behind every RNLI volunteer is a network of loved ones keeping everything going while we save lives at sea. Every launch, every successful rescue, has been a tremendous privilege,” Roger added.

“I’m proud to be part of Brighton’s diverse crew, a supportive organisation like an extended family. The courageous and dependable nature of our team remains a constant.”

249 Lives Saved and Counting

Since joining RNLI in 1982, Roger has been involved in 2,260 lifeboat launches, rescuing 248 people. His dedication earned him the MBE for services to the RNLI and charity.
