Big Clampdown on Illegal Workers Hits Salisbury Restaurants
On June 29, Salisbury’s Neighbourhood Team joined forces with response units, specialist departments, and immigration officials to raid five city centre restaurants in a coordinated swoop.
Checking Workers’ Rights and Welfare
The teams grilled staff to check their welfare and confirm they were working legally and getting the pay and support they deserved. Employers also came under scrutiny to ensure they were running their businesses by the book.
Five Arrests and Huge Fines Hit Restaurant Owners
The crackdown led to five arrests, though one suspect was later released. On top of that, three restaurant bosses were slapped with fines totalling a whopping £60,000 for employing illegal workers.
Inspector Tina Osborn said: “This was a successful operation in collaboration with our partners to perform modern slavery checks and ensure that employees were working legally and being treated appropriately.
“We take modern slavery incredibly seriously and will clamp down on employers breaching laws regarding immigration and employees’ rights.
“I would like to remind business owners that it’s your responsibility to check the immigration status of any employees you are hiring.”
