Dele Alli Opens Up About Shocking Struggles Behind Football Glory

Dele Alli’s football career has taken a nosedive in recent years. Now, the former Tottenham star has revealed the heartbreaking battles he’s faced off the pitch.

From Rising Star to Dark Struggles

Once a Premier League sensation, Alli burst onto the scene after a £5 million move from MK Dons at just 19. He dazzled for Tottenham, winning back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. In those years, he was involved in an eye-watering total of 46 goals.

But after Mauricio Pochettino’s exit, Alli’s form plummeted under managers Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte. A January 2022 switch to Everton failed to reignite his spark. Worse still, during a loan spell at Besiktas, he was reportedly sidelined and even missed training.

Raw Confession: Battling Addiction and Trauma

In a gutsy interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Alli spoke candidly about his darkest moments. He revealed childhood trauma and a long battle with addiction to sleeping pills that derailed his career.

“It’s the first time in a long while I can genuinely say ‘yes’ when asked if I’m okay,” Alli said. “I’ve regained my passion for football.”

After returning from Turkey and facing surgery, Alli checked himself into a modern rehab centre tackling mental health, addiction, and trauma. He insisted his recovery was his own choice and praised Everton for their support.

Alli also dropped a bombshell about his addiction: “Sleeping pills are handed out in football to help players rest. But I abused them, never dealing with the root issues – the trauma I faced growing up.”

Dark Childhood Revealed: Abuse, Addiction, and Survival

Alli revealed why he swapped the name on his jersey from “Alli” to “Dele” in 2016 – he felt disconnected from his family name due to his troubled upbringing. His mother, battling alcoholism, gave him up for adoption. He endured molestation at six, started smoking at eight, was selling drugs by eleven, and was even hung off a bridge at twelve.

“I was molested by my mum’s friend. At seven, sent to Africa for discipline. I began selling drugs while playing football. Then I was adopted by an incredible family – if there is a higher power, they were it,” he said.

He stressed he doesn’t want pity, but hopes his story sheds light on hidden struggles in football and beyond.

On the Road to Recovery and Redemption

Alli’s open-heart interview has already grabbed over 29,000 views on 1. His honesty is breaking the silence around football’s mental health and addiction stigma.

Determined to reclaim his career, Alli said, “My past doesn’t define me. I’m ready to show my true potential and inspire others to seek help.”

Even Harry Kane sent a heartfelt message to show support after Alli’s move to Everton, highlighting the impact of his brave revelations.
