Newly released police bodycam footage has shed light on an incident involving a dog attack, captured moments before officers resorted to using a Taser and placing the animal inside a wheelie bin. West Midlands Police released the footage in response to a witness video circulating on social media, which sparked criticism of the officers’ actions.
The recorded incident took place on Tuesday and shows the dog aggressively attacking other dogs while onlookers nervously attempt to intervene. The release of the police footage aims to provide context and clarity, addressing the online criticism faced by the officers.
In an accompanying statement, West Midlands Police emphasized that the dog was “clearly out of control” and had already assaulted other canines before the Taser was deployed. The force further stated that the dog posed a threat to nearby individuals, including children, and had even attacked a member of the public, who had to defend themselves using an umbrella.
Following the incident, the force also shared additional footage of the dog, refuting claims that the animal had been fatally injured. “The dog was seized by the Dangerous Dogs Unit and has since been examined by a veterinarian and placed in secure kennels,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
Contrary to rumours, the dog is reported to be in good health and is currently being cared for by kennel staff. The owner of the dog is said to be fully informed about the actions taken by the police.
Regarding the decision to use a Taser, West Midlands Police explained that it was necessary to prevent the dog from inflicting serious harm due to its uncontrollable behaviour.
