Drug Kingpin Caught at Newcastle Airport After Pandemic Cocaine Plot
Christopher Riley, 35, was slammed with a 12-and-a-half-year jail sentence at Newcastle Crown Court. He masterminded a huge cocaine supply racket during the Covid-19 lockdown, flooding the streets with drugs worth over half a million pounds.
Operation Venetic Nails Local Crime Boss
Riley first caught police attention in 2020 during Operation Venetic — an international crackdown on organised crime. Northumbria Police quickly launched a covert investigation to dismantle his cocaine network.
They uncovered Riley’s right-hand man, Darren Johnson, 48, and revealed the pair sold 15kg of high-grade cocaine plus a hefty stash of cannabis between April and May 2020.
High-Stakes Bust Ends Lux Dubai Trip
On May 12, 2022, police struck. Riley was arrested as he landed back from Dubai at Newcastle Airport. Officers also raided his home, seizing £3,270 cash, crypto passwords and a knuckleduster.
Johnson was busted the same day driving in Byker. Police found cannabis worth £16,800, some cocaine, another knuckleduster, and a detailed debtors list in his home.
Long Jail Sentences for Cocaine Dealers
- Christopher Riley of Washington Terrace, North Shields pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs and was jailed for 12-and-a-half years.
- Darren Johnson of Frosterley Place also admitted conspiracy and received nine-and-a-half years behind bars.
The men’s conviction sends a strong message that North East police will not tolerate drug crime, even during a global pandemic.
