A man has been found guilty of killing his 74-year-old neighbour after a bitter row over a gate in Covent Garden. The Metropolitan Police Service led the investigation into the shocking case.

On Thursday, May 1, a jury at Southwark Crown Court convicted Trevor Gocan, 57, of manslaughter over the death of James ‘Jim’ O’Neill.

Daylight Attack Shocks Community

The fatal assault happened on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Odhams Walk, right near both men’s homes. Mr O’Neill was viciously attacked in broad daylight, in full view of the public — including children.

He was rushed to hospital but tragically died on Monday, October 21 from his injuries.

Brutal Injuries Lead to Death

Emergency services arrived around 12:00pm and found Mr O’Neill with multiple injuries. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and broken ribs.

Despite doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to complications caused by the assault.

Gocan was arrested shortly after the attack at a nearby property where he lived.

A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death was complications from the assault.

Gocan Claims Self-Defence But Jury Unmoved

During police interviews, Gocan refused to comment. At trial, he argued he acted in self-defence following a dispute about a gate.

The jury rejected this defence and found him guilty of manslaughter.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr O’Neill, who lost a loved one in shocking circumstances. The jury’s verdict shows that casual, thuggish violence will not be tolerated on London’s streets.”

Sentencing Date Locked In

Trevor Gocan has been remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing, scheduled for Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Southwark Crown Court.
