Move Over London: Barnsley Crowned UK’s First Government-Backed Tech Town
South Yorkshire’s Barnsley is stealing the limelight as the UK’s first official Tech Town. Residents will soon benefit from free AI training and AI-powered public services in healthcare, education, and local government. This bold 18-month pilot scheme could change the game for towns outside London and the South East.
AI Set to Transform Healthcare, Schools, and Local Services
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has revealed plans to turn Barnsley into a cutting-edge AI testbed. The goal: build a national blueprint for smart tech beyond the capital. Expect faster hospital check-ins, smarter classrooms, and streamlined council services.
- AI slashing hospital waiting times with efficient check-ins and triage
- Schools and Barnsley College trial AI tech to boost student results and ease teachers’ workload
- Local businesses get digital skills training at the new Seam Digital Campus
Big Tech Giants Rally Behind Barnsley
Microsoft, Cisco, and Adobe are on board, supplying tech know-how and training. Sarah Walker, Cisco UK & Ireland CEO, called AI “more transformative than the internet itself,” praising the project’s positive impact on communities and workplaces.
Local Leaders Back AI Revolution
Sir Stephen Houghton, Barnsley Council Leader, has said this is “one of the most important investments in Barnsley’s history,” promising a boost for the local economy. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard praised the growing digital ecosystem in the region.
“Barnsley could guide us to an AI-powered future that puts people and their families first, and that builds stronger communities,” said Nobel Prize-winning Government AI Ambassador Simon Johnson.
Communities at the Heart of the Tech Town
The scheme makes sure everyone benefits. Free digital skills courses will be open to all ages through Barnsley College and the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology. Residents can also shape Barnsley’s AI journey via “Tech Town Halls.”
AI Investment Surge Sweeps UK
Barnsley’s AI push follows a government blitz on tech: free AI training for millions, Lanarkshire labelled an AI Growth Zone, and a £36 million AI supercomputer launched in Cambridge.
Already, Microsoft Copilot is assisting social care and robot couriers are being tested locally. The £15 million South Yorkshire Institute of Technology campus will be the hub for much of the AI training and support, cementing Barnsley’s place as Britain’s new AI hotspot.
