Massive Tax Fraud Bust Hits UK, US and Australia

Over 100 HMRC officers stormed 90 businesses across England, Scotland and Wales in a week-long blitz targeting a slick tax evasion scam. The racket? Using Electronic Sales Suppression (ESS) software to hide real takings and dodge tax bills.

Global Crime Ring Uncovered

The ESS system, believed to be designed and sold by a Staffordshire gang, lets firms delete sales records and funnel card payments through offshore banks. It’s a sneaky setup that’s now under the spotlight worldwide, with operations also hitting the US and Australia, coordinated by the Joint Chiefs of Global Tax Enforcement (J5).

Crackdown Details and Arrests

  • Thousands of businesses flagged through HMRC data analysis.
  • Businesses urged to come clean with voluntary tax disclosures – or face harsher penalties.
  • Six suspects arrested, including men from Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Warwick, Stoke-on-Trent and a woman in Luton, all facing serious tax fraud and money laundering charges.
  • Nine premises searched across the Midlands during the probe.

HMRC Chief Vows to Stamp Out Fraud

“This was a highly sophisticated, truly global attack on the UK and our international partners. The group behind this activity enabled thousands of businesses to dodge tax on a large scale,” said Simon York, HMRC’s Director of Fraud Investigation.

“Our internationally coordinated action sends a clear message: we are closing the net on designers, suppliers and users of these rigged sales systems. Most businesses pay their taxes honestly, and we won’t allow tax cheats to undercut them. This is just the start – other suspects are already in our sights. If you’re involved, come forward now before we come to you.”
