Lucy Spraggan Reveals Shocking X Factor Assault
Former X Factor star Lucy Spraggan has bravely opened up about a horrific attack during the 2012 ITV talent show. The singer, now 31, revealed she was raped by a hotel porter while competing on the programme. She spoke candidly in a new memoir, Process: Finding My Way Through, and in a telling interview with The Guardian.
Night Out Turns Nightmare
Lucy described how the assault unfolded after a boozy celebration at a Mayfair nightclub with fellow contestants and production staff. After passing out, a member of the production team helped her back to the hotel. But it was there that a porter used a “traceable keycard” to sneak into her room and attack her.
The traumatised 20-year-old woke up overwhelmed by shock and dread. “I knew I’d been raped but couldn’t make sense of it,” she said. Despite the horror, Lucy said she went through the motions of her day in total shock.
ITV and Production Team Under Fire
The production crew quickly called the police, but Lucy slammed ITV’s handling. She blasted the toxic culture of free-flowing booze. “It was wrong for anyone to be intoxicated when there should have been a duty of care,” she said.
Even though the attacker was convicted, Spraggan says she got zero aftercare. “No one contacted me to check on my wellbeing or offer support,” she revealed.
Why Lucy Left The X Factor
Lucy bowed out of the live shows citing illness. But now she admits she was battling side effects from HIV prevention drugs she took after the assault. She wanted to expose the truth at the time but was warned it might wreck her career.
Her memoir is her way of reclaiming her story and shedding light on what really happened. Despite everything, Lucy went on to score two UK top 10 albums.
ITV and Producers Respond
ITV issued a statement expressing “deep compassion” and praised Lucy’s courage. They blamed primary duty of care on production companies Thames and Syco and promised tougher welfare protections.
Fremantle, which produced The X Factor, also expressed regret over the painful incident and admitted their aftercare needed improvement. They applauded Lucy’s bravery in waiving her anonymity.
Taking Time for Mental Health
Lucy announced she’s stepping back from social media to protect her mental health. She called this the start of a “new era” in her life, focusing on healing and honesty.
