Drunk Driver’s Fatal Attack on Couple Ends in Murder Conviction
Paul tragically died 14 months after being left paralysed when Samuel Rogers deliberately crashed into his car. His wife suffered serious injuries in the shocking attack. Paul passed away in hospital from pneumonia and sepsis linked to his injuries.
Man Behind Wheel Uses Car as Weapon
Samuel Rogers, 45, from Walsall, was slammed with a 20-year, six-month prison sentence after a West Midlands Police investigation. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and causing serious injury by reckless driving.
Rogers was nearly twice over the legal alcohol limit when he rammed Paul’s Ford C-Max on Melchett Road, Kings Norton.
Attack Followed Heated Row
Police revealed Paul had pulled over to help another driver—someone Rogers had followed after an earlier argument at her home in Stirchley. Rogers had even threatened to kill the woman.
Long Road to Justice
Rogers initially fled but quickly returned and was arrested at the scene while paramedics tried to save Paul.
Following Paul’s death, officers reopened the case to confirm if Rogers’ attack was the cause. Over six years, specialists in dermatology, respiratory health and anaesthetics confirmed Paul’s fatal conditions were directly linked to his crash injuries.
“Paul would not have died if Rogers had not hit him,” said legal experts.
Murder Verdict Delivered
On June 17 at Birmingham Crown Court, a jury found Rogers guilty of murder. His sentencing is scheduled for July 7.
