Kent Launches Furniture Reuse Container to Cut Waste
Got furniture too good to dump? Kent County Council (KCC) has rolled out a brand-new ‘reuse container’ at their Tovil Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). This clever initiative gives your unwanted chairs, tables, wardrobes, and bookcases a second chance — and helps locals in crisis.
How It Works: Bring, Sell, Support
The container, managed by Commercial Services Group alongside charity 1 Making a Difference maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone (MADM), opened this week. For the next six months, residents can drop off reusable furniture instead of scrapping it.
- Furniture goes to MADM shops for resale, raising funds for community outreach.
- Some pieces are gifted to residents facing hardship via referrals from social services, police, probation, and local groups.
MADM supports vulnerable people with furniture, advocacy, emotional support, and practical help.
KCC and MADM Team Up for Community Impact
Susan Carey, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This trial ticks all the boxes — it gives furniture a new lease of life, cuts waste, and supports a great cause.”
“We’re proud to partner with MADM at the Tovil site. If you can’t bring items yourself, MADM might be able to collect them.”
Carey also teased more reuse projects are in the pipeline for Kent’s waste centres. “Watch this space!”
Amanda Sidwell, founder of MADM, added: “We’re thrilled to join forces with KCC and the community on this brilliant scheme.”
