Pair Found Guilty of Robbing Pensioner They Called a Friend

Amanda Yeaman and David McNeill have been convicted of assault and theft after targeting a 75-year-old man they once called a friend. The victim described Yeaman as a regular visitor, which made the betrayal all the more shocking.

Drunken Visit Turns Ugly

The court heard Yeaman went to the pensioner’s home to borrow money and returned later that night with McNeill, both drunk. After being invited in, a scuffle broke out, leaving the elderly man with scrapes and bruises. He then pretended to be unconscious and triggered his alarm after they left.

“There was a scuffle and the complainant was assaulted, resulting in minor injuries,” prosecutor David Povall said. The victim soon discovered cash, a mobile phone, and a wedding ring had vanished.

From Robbery to Suspended Sentences

Originally charged with robbery, Yeaman, 48, and McNeill, 35, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and theft. McNeill also admitted offering cannabis after police found texts on his phone.

Both received suspended ten-month sentences. Yeaman was ordered to undergo alcohol treatment, while McNeill was handed 150 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Condemns but Shows Sympathy

“Yeaman, you were friendly with the victim and regularly visited him at his home,” Recorder Tahir Khan KC said. “He was 75, living in sheltered housing, and appreciated your visits. But on May 1, you assaulted him and stole money, his phone, and a wedding ring.”

Yeaman’s lawyer revealed her troubled past, recent bereavement, and struggle with alcoholism. McNeill’s lawyer highlighted his mental health issues.
