Mark Andrews abused his victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, for several years in the 1980s and 1990s. The court heard how he would physically assault the victim, frequently leaving her injured, and she would be forced to lie to teachers who asked her about it. In addition to the physical abuse, Andrews sexually assaulted the victim on several occasions and eventually began raping her. “This has been a complex and lengthy investigation into horrific physical and sexual abuse,” said Detective Sergeant Alex Edwards of Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team. “I wish to commend the victim for her courage both in coming forward and her continued strength throughout the investigation.” What happened to her as a child was traumatic, and it will most likely affect her for the rest of her life. Andrews used physical and sexual violence to control and terrorise his victim, and he has shown no remorse for his crimes. I am pleased that he has received a lengthy custodial sentence today in recognition of his sick crimes, and I sincerely hope that the conclusion of the legal process allows his victim to take another step forward in her recovery.” Andrews, formerly of Musgrave Road in Sheffield, was sentenced to 15 years in prison yesterday at Sheffield Crown Court. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for rape and three years for child cruelty (to run consecutively). He was also sentenced to two years in prison for indecent assault and one year in prison for gross indecency with a child, both of which will run concurrently.
