A Man Has Been Jailed Over A House Fire Which Took Place In Stoke-on-trent Last Year

Scott Tomkinson, 46, from uk/topic/bentilee/">Bentilee, admitted arson with recklessness to endanger life at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, on 1 December 2022.

He was sentenced to three years behind bars at the same court on Friday (3 March).

The court heard how officers, firefighters and paramedics, attended an address on Dividy Road at 8.35pm on 9 July 2022.

On arrival, the rear of the property was found well-alight.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire while, Tomkinson, the sole individual who had been in the property, was arrested a short time later. He was subsequently charged before pleading guilty to the offences.

Speaking following Tomkinson’s sentencing hearing, PC Alexander Potts, of Stoke North Local Policing Team, said: “Tomkinson posed a serious threat to people who live and work in the area, when he intentionally started this large fire.

“I hope his conviction and jail term reassures the community that we will take action against anyone recklessly putting others in danger.”

Liam Hickey, Station Manager at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Following joint investigative work, it is fitting that the arsonist was handed a custodial sentence for his dangerous actions.

“Such actions have a significant impact upon local communities and put our fire fighters at risk.

Thanks to colleagues at Staffordshire Police for all of the hard work that has gone into achieving this outcome.
