Notorious Drug Lord Michael Paul Moogan Nabbed After 8 Years on the Run

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has finally brought down one of the UK’s most wanted criminals, Michael Paul Moogan, 37, from Croxteth, Liverpool. Moogan vanished in October 2013 after a police raid on a café believed to be a hotspot for drug cartel meetings.

Secret Café in Rotterdam Behind Major Cocaine Plot

The Café de Ketel in Rotterdam wasn’t your average hangout. It was a private, ultra-secure venue accessible only via a security system to trusted criminals. Working alongside the Dutch National Crime Squad, the NCA uncovered Moogan’s role in coordinating shipments of hundreds of kilos of cocaine every month into the UK through this hub.

  • Another associate, Robert Gerard, handed himself in after 3 years on the run and was jailed for 14 years.

Moogan’s Multimillion-Euro Drug Empire Exposed

Moogan had access to half a million euros at a time to fund cocaine deals, paying in lump sums via Iraqi nationals based in the UK — avoiding the usual instalment payments. His shipments came concealed in meat from Argentina, with bribed port officials ensuring safe passage.

His drug trafficking network stretched from Latin America across Europe—from Bulgaria and Latvia to Spain and Belgium—before reaching UK streets.

Dubai Police Crack Down, Moogan Finally Caught

In April 2021, Dubai Police arrested Moogan after a high-tech manhunt. Using multiple fake IDs and a German passport, he even fooled security cameras until clever detective work tracked him down.

“Moogan did everything he could to avoid this day but justice has finally caught up with him,” said NCA Senior Investigating Officer Ben Rutter.

“His consignments of Class A drugs undoubtedly brought misery and real harm to UK communities.”

“Fugitives should take note – the NCA has global reach and will never stop hunting them.”

After his extradition to the UK, Moogan told officers: “You’re not going to have any trouble from me. I’m tired now. Get me up to Manny and get me in Cat A. I’m done now.”

Moogan faced manchester-crown-court/" title="Manchester Crown Court" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="856">Manchester Crown Court last November and pled guilty to conspiring to import Class A drugs. Today, he was jailed—avoiding a possible 20-year sentence thanks to his guilty plea.
