Bishop’s Waltham’s New Fire Station Opens with a Bang

After more than six decades at Lower Lane, Bishop’s Waltham’s firefighters have a spanking new fire station. The official opening saw local dignitaries and senior officers celebrate a state-of-the-art facility designed to boost training, community engagement, and, of course, firefighting.

From Demolition to Dedication

  • Planning approval was granted in August 2021.
  • The fire crew moved to a temporary site in February last year.
  • The old station was swiftly demolished just weeks later.
  • A ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of construction nearly a year ago.
  • On-call firefighters have just completed their first weekly drill night at the new site this month.

Leaders Laud New Facilities

Chief Fire Officer Neil Odin led the speakers, introducing key figures including Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Authority Chairman, Councillor Rhydian Vaughan MBE, and HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson.

Station Manager Jamie Cousins, Head of Property Arron Hedges, and Morgan Sindall’s Cliff Kinch also praised the new headquarters.

“This modern fire station is built to support our on-call firefighters in serving their local community,” said Chief Fire Officer Neil Odin.

“With new training spaces and community engagement areas, it will keep Bishop’s Waltham and wider Hampshire safer for years to come.”

Watch Manager Ady Smith added:

“I’m incredibly proud to serve during this historic moment. These facilities will help us train harder, respond quicker, and connect better with our community.”

Cutting-Edge Features and Green Touches

Visitors at the opening got tours of top-class training zones, a new tower, and a dedicated community engagement area.

The stylish building features nesting bricks that encourage local wildlife. A bird moved in almost immediately after installation!

Part of a Bigger Fire Service Transformation

Arron Hedges revealed the station is part of a broader estate upgrade across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Plans include new facilities and a brand-new Cosham fire station set to open next year.

Morgan Sindall’s Cliff Kinch highlighted the project’s community focus:

“We worked closely with local residents and groups to create a better environment for firefighters and the people they protect. This was a true community effort.”

Next Up: Cosham’s Cutting-Edge Station

Work began last month on Cosham’s brand-new three-storey fire station. Features will include advanced training facilities, clean and dirty zones to manage contamination, and partner spaces.

The wholetime firefighters will move from their current site, just across the road, once it’s finished in 2025.

The last time Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue opened a new station was in Basingstoke five years ago. Bishop’s Waltham’s upgrade signals a new era of modern fire service facilities across the region.
