Young Cadets Take on Speedsters in Tunbridge Wells
Armed with speed guns and hi-vis jackets, local Police Cadets teamed up with Speedwatch groups to tackle speeding hotspots across Tunbridge Wells. The action-packed patrols took place on Tuesday 27 July and Tuesday 4 August, organised by PCSOs from the Tunbridge Wells Community Safety Unit (CSU).
From Briefing Room to Busy Streets
The day kicked off at the town police station, where cadets practiced using speed guns and donned high-visibility gear to stay safe. They hit the roads at notorious trouble spots including Major York’s Road near the town centre, Pembury High Street, and Coach Road in Rusthall.
Hands-On Experience for Future Officers
CSU Inspector Ian Jones said: “These young cadets have all worked very hard and for some it will be the first time they have had hands-on experience interacting with members of the public and police officers. They each took turns operating the speed gun and recording registration numbers of vehicles travelling too fast.”
The information gathered will aid local Speedwatch teams in keeping the roads safer, with the cadets’ efforts highly praised for their enthusiasm and commitment.
Cadets: The Next Generation of Community Guardians
The Volunteer Police Cadets scheme, supported by Kent Police, offers young people aged 13 to 17 a chance to join a uniformed organisation. Cadets meet weekly for two to three hours during term time and volunteer an extra three hours monthly on community projects, learning vital skills for the future.
