Sunak Launches Ruthless Crackdown on Grooming Gangs
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today unveiled hard-hitting plans to obliterate grooming gangs preying on children and young women. The new Grooming Gangs Taskforce will deploy specialist officers to back up local police in tackling live child sexual exploitation cases and bring more vile offenders to justice.
Specialist Taskforce Targets Exploiters Nationwide
Led by the police and backed by the National Crime Agency, the taskforce consists of seasoned officers skilled in grooming gang investigations. They’ll work across the country, rooting out these predators and ensuring they face the full force of the law.
Smart data analysts will use cutting-edge intelligence to unmask offenders who might otherwise slip through the cracks. This includes tracking offenders’ ethnicity to stop criminals hiding behind cultural sensitivities — no more soft-soaping justice.
Sunak Calls Time on Political Correctness
Launching the taskforce in Leeds and Greater Manchester, Sunak said: “The safety of women and girls is paramount. For too long, political correctness has stopped us from weeding out vile criminals who prey on children and young women. We will stop at nothing to stamp out these dangerous gangs.”
Justice Secretary Dominic Raab added: “Grooming gangs are a scourge on our society. Anyone who exploits vulnerable children will face the full weight of the law.”
Tougher Sentencing and Mandatory Reporting on the Way
Sunak also pledged to push legislation designating grooming gang leadership as a “statutory aggravating factor” in sentencing, ensuring predators get the harshest punishments possible.
The Government is also set to introduce a mandatory reporting duty for adults working with children. Anyone suspecting abuse must report it to stop harm sooner and bring offenders down faster.
This follows recommendations from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, which gave a voice to thousands of survivors.
Professor Alexis Jay OBE, Chair of the Inquiry, welcomed the move: “The Prime Minister’s statement places renewed focus on tackling sexual abuse by organised networks. The commitment to Mandatory Reporting is very encouraging, and I look forward to working to protect children better.”
Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: “Child sexual abuse devastates victims and communities. We must all call it out without fear. Abusers won’t hide any longer — they’ll face the full force of the law.”
She urged the public to engage with the upcoming mandatory reporting process, calling it a vital national conversation to shine a light on this hidden crime.
The Government will also boost support for the NSPCC’s whistleblowing and public helplines, giving professionals and the public a vital tool to report grooming and protect children across the UK.
