North Yorkshire Goes Digital with Land Charges Register Overhaul
Big news from North Yorkshire! HM Land Registry and seven local land charges (LLC) teams have successfully switched their LLC registers to a slick new digital service. This move means instant online access for customers hunting down crucial property info.
Seven Districts Unite Under One Digital Roof
Since April 1, 2023, seven district councils—Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough, and Selby—merged into the new North Yorkshire Council. This mega-merger aims to boost services and improve life across the region.
The councils teamed up with HM Land Registry to migrate over 334,000 local land charge records to the award-winning digital LLC service. Now, anyone can quickly check common charges like planning permissions, listed building statuses, and tree preservation orders online.
Why Digital Searches Are a Game Changer
Getting an LLC search is vital when buying property. It reveals essential restrictions or obligations—facts that could make or break a sale. Early access to this info helps prevent costly transaction failures, which can run up to £2,700 per case and waste buyers’ time.
David Clothier, Service Improvement & Development Manager at Harrogate Council, said:
“We feel proud that our team has pulled together to achieve our part of this national project. Transforming more than 100,000 LLC records was a huge challenge for us, but the support we got from HM Land Registry was outstanding. Expertise from both organisations helped to overcome many challenges, making the migration journey smoother.”
Speedy Migration Boosts Economy and Efficiency
Completing this migration before North Yorkshire’s new unitary council formed was no mean feat. The project’s success owes a lot to a clever regional cluster strategy, letting councils back each other and speed up the process.
More than 500,000 searches have already been made in areas where migration is complete. This digital shift isn’t just about convenience—it’s set to unlock up to £12 in economic benefits for every £1 invested, thanks to high-quality, standardised data that helps government and industry work smarter.
The plan is to migrate every local authority in England and Wales by 2025, spreading the benefits nationwide. Lessons from North Yorkshire’s journey will speed up future migrations and ensure councils undergoing mergers hit the ground running.
Stay tuned as North Yorkshire leads the way, turning land charges into a digital trailblazer for the entire UK.
