Grandson Jailed for Life After Killing Grandfather and Neighbour’s Cat
A 27-year-old man has been handed life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his grandfather. Benjamin Dunlop, currently of no fixed address, will serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars.
Gruesome Discovery at Measham Home
The chilling crime unfolded just before 5pm on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, in Hart Drive, Measham. Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the address after concerns about the welfare of Benjamin and his 75-year-old grandfather, Ronald Dunlop.
Ronald was found dead at the property where Benjamin was temporarily staying. Strikingly, a neighbour’s cat was also discovered dead at the scene.
Admissions to Ambulance Crew Seal Conviction
Benjamin Dunlop left the property but soon returned, confessing to the ambulance crew that he had harmed both his grandfather and the cat. Two days later, he was charged with murder and criminal damage relating to the cat’s death.
The court sentenced Dunlop to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years. He also received a concurrent six-month sentence for the cat’s death.
Investigator Speaks Out
“Firstly, my thoughts remain with the family of Ronald,” said Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit.
“While this sentence doesn’t bring him back, or repair the tragic situation this family has found itself in, knowing that Ben is serving his time for what he did will, I hope, allow them to move on from what has been a lengthy wait for justice.”
