Wiltshire Police Nab 43 Drink and Drug-Drivers in Two Weeks
Wiltshire police are cracking down hard after 43 arrests for driving under the influence of drink or drugs in just two weeks. The force ramped up proactive checks amid rising concerns about reckless motorists during lockdown.
Lockdown Spawns Reckless Driving Crackdown
- Between 1 and 14 February, cops made 47 arrests: 22 for drink driving, 21 for drug driving.
- 67 speed checks across Wiltshire resulted in 56 traffic offence reports and multiple penalties.
- 44 vehicles were seized for no insurance, plus 11 stopped with no MOT and 13 without tax.
- Road traffic collisions fell by over 30 compared to earlier weeks, down to 68 incidents.
Young Drivers Make Up Majority of Suspected Drug Offenders
“Over half of all suspected drug drivers arrested (55%) are aged 18-30,” said Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith. “It’s never acceptable to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Our officers are trained to spot the signs and will always take action.”
Warning from Officials: Drink and Drug Driving Ruins Lives
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jerry Herbert stressed the severe consequences: “A conviction can mean losing your licence or prison time. Drink and drug driving is one of the ‘fatal four’ factors causing serious road injuries or deaths in Wiltshire.”
He added: “Even if you’re drinking at home, alcohol and drugs stay in your system longer than you think. There’s never an excuse to drive under the influence.”
Wiltshire Police Urge Public to Report Suspects
The force vows to continue proactive policing during lockdown. If you suspect someone frequently drives after drinking or taking drugs, call 101 with details like car registration and times.
If a crime is happening and the driver is on the road now, dial 999 immediately.
